Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women and yet remains enigmatic.

Despite its high prevalence in the population, much controversy remains regarding its diagnosis, its etiology and the most appropriate treatment strategy.

In this class we will explore the signs and symptoms of PCOS from both a Western and TCM perspective. Risk factors, screening protocol, and Endocrine Society guidelines for diagnosis and management of PCOS are discussed. TCM syndromes associated with PCOS are presented as well as herbal treatment protocol.

On completion of this class, the participant will:
  • Learn to differentiate the signs and symptoms associated with PCOS.
  • Learn clinical guidelines for the diagnosis of PCOS as established by NIH and Endocrine Society.
  • Learn Western and TCM treatment protocols to address PCOS.

About Dr. Daoshing Ni, D.O.M., L.AC., PH.D, DIPL.C.HDr. Daoshing Ni
Dr. Dao is a Licensed Acupuncturist in the State of California and is a Diplomate of Chinese Herbology NCCA. Dr. Dao has been active in the TCM profession as well as professional organizations. He was an examiner for the California Acupuncture Committee and also participated in the Chinese Herbology Exam development for NCCA.

Well known and respected for his special interest in reproductive and gynecological conditions, Dr. Dao is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Pacific Coast Fertility Society, and American Association of Oriental Medicine.

Dr. Dao is the author of Tao of Fertility and co-author of Sitting Moon: A Guide to Rejuvenation after Pregnancy.

After 15 years of intensive and broad-based research, TCM has become a staple of Assisted Reproductive Technology care plans. As is true in Western Medicine research, TCM research is not without its controversies. In this lecture, Dr. Magarelli will explore other more far-reaching integrative medicine concepts to further the bond that has developed between these two modalities with the shared goal of One Healthy Baby™.

Learning Objectives:
✅ Oocyte physiology will be used as a backdrop for participant understanding of the principles involved in metabolomics.
✅ Integration of basic tenets of TCM with the pathophysiology of microenvironments will be discussed and participants will be lead down an algorithm to provide healing modalities to change reproductive outcomes in a positive way.
✅ Substantive discussions regarding present and future areas of research in integrative metabolomics will act as a challenge for participants to collaborate in projects

About Paul Magarelli, MD, PhD, F.A.C.O.G.

If you ask anyone in Colorado about Dr Paul Magarelli they will tell you that he makes babies for a living. Dr Magarelli and his Magarelli Fertility Center (MFC) Team have served Colorado and the Western Region as a Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist since 1998. Over 1,000 babies are part of his legacy, and he has only just begun. His motto of practice began as “High Tech with a Personal Touch” then evolved to “We Heal by Creating Families in an Affordable way”.

Recently Dr Magarelli decided to spearhead a change in how Reproductive Medicine is practised in the United States. He did this by creating HQA-Fertility Care (said HiKu). High Quality Affordable Fertility Care is a revolutionary approach to helping infertility patients get access to all types of fertility care, including High Tech in the forms of IVF/ICSI and Comprehensive Chromosomal Screening (CCS/PGD), at incredibly affordable prices. He changed the average fee for IVF from $18,000 to $9,000 and the typical fees for CCS/PGD from over $36,000 to $13,000. This is a major shift in the accessibility and affordability of infertility care. He did this while preserving his signature 5 Star service guarantee: he and his staff will provide care in a pleasant, compassionate, competent and respectful fashion. He also created a program in which patients with cancers that may make them permanently infertile, can have an IVF cycle at no fee and this includes medications. He is now advancing care for our military with his US Military Family Fertility Services™ non-profit program in which active-duty soldiers can apply for grants for money and/or services.

Dr Magarelli and his wife, Diane K Cridennda, L.Ac., Doctor of Oriental Medicine (NMex), of East Winds Acupuncture in Colorado Springs originated the research to incorporate Acupuncture into IVF treatment cycles. Their C-MAP protocol (Cridennda Magarelli Acupuncture Protocol) is used worldwide to help infertility patients create “One Healthy Baby™”. Both Dr Magarelli and Dr Diane founded and serve on the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine and both are invited lecturers worldwide on topics that range from infertility to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Menopause, Andropause and the treatment of Insulin Resistance.

Dr Magarelli designed the nation’s first comprehensive clinic to treat Insulin Resistance and its sequelae of diabetes, hypertension, low testosterone, depression, andropause, fatigue and more in his clinic called the Institute for Sustained Health™.

Dr Magarelli remains the only RE in the city with the ability to diagnose and treat folks both locally, nationally and internationally. He is a graduate of Duke University Health Sciences Residency and UCLA RE Fellowship program. He earned his PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry and Physiology at the University of Arizona. Recently he was elected President of the nations’ oldest regional fertility organization, the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society.

The 2022 Yo San Symposium: Integrative Women’s Health & Reproductive Medicine presents two days with top leaders in the field to highlight the latest advances, practice and challenges in reproductive medicine from east, west and integrative perspectives. Attendees will learn from current insights on key aspects of fertility care, including addressing conditions such as PCOS, enhancing endometrial receptivity, factors around IVF success, advances and questions in genetic testing, and more. Speakers include internationally-known specialists such as Daoshing Ni, OMD, PhD, FABORM, LAc, Richard Marrs, MD, RE, Paul Turek, MD, FACS, Cheryl Arutt, PsyD, and more, including medical, TCM, and research professionals.

Richard Paulson, MD

Dr. Richard Paulson is the Director of USC Fertility, and has been with the practice since 1986. He is also a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.

Help or Harm?
Nutraceuticals and Assisted Reproduction
Paul Magarelli, MD, PhD

In this presentation we will be addressing the area of supplementation and whether or not adding nutrients in the form of vitamins or macromolecules can impact fertility potential. Nutraceuticals are compounds that can contribute to your metabolism both naturally as well as in the higher technologies like in vitro fertilization and ovulation induction.

After 15 years of intensive and broad-based research, TCM has become a staple of Assisted Reproductive Technology care plans.
